Some notes about the special materials and techniques I use:
Iridescent color gives a subtle, lustrous shimmer; I use fine iridescence rather than coarse.
Interference color is a special paint that shifts color depending on the angle of viewing and light, e.g., gold will become platinum. Bright, intense light shows the effect most.
Micaceous iron oxide is a deep gray based acrylic paint with loads of tiny mica flakes that give a beautiful sparkle in bright light.
Modelling or molding paste (what it's called depends on the manufacturer) is a thick, acrylic-based material that makes wonderful built-up textures and can be structured in many ways depending on the tools used and techniques of application. It is light-weight and flexible when dry. Sometimes I mix in a middle value color with the paste before creating thin to thick applications on the painting support. I then continue to paint over the material many times (glazes) to get the colors and effects I want. Examples of this can be seen in the banner at the top of the page - the first, third and fifth photos.
Other texture mediums include fine and coarse sand, flakes, fibers, black lava, tiny beads, and ceramic stucco.
Crackle paste creates a unique texture because it literally cracks as it dries. The depth of the cracks depends on how thickly it is applied. The first picture in the banner above is an example of crackle paste - those lines occurred due to do the nature of crackle paste; I also applied paint into the cracks to accentuate them.
These paint and textural effects cannot really be photographed well. You have to see them in person to get the full beauty.
